A pact against cyber threats was signed at the G7

The operations of cybercriminal groups attributable to Russia are being targeted. Network security also at the heart of the NATO summit

Hacker hacks a smartphone (Getty Images) The group of the seven richest nations in the world has asked Russia to take action against the authors of cyber attacks and ransomware who have started from its territory, "To identify, hinder and hold accountable all those who launch ransomware attacks from their borders, abuse virtual currency to launder ransoms and commit other cybercrimes". The recall to Moscow is contained in the final declaration of the G7 of Carbis Bay, together with the request to "investigate and explain in a credible way the use of chemical weapons on one's own soil", with implicit reference to the case of the poisoning of the political opponent Alexei Navalny.

In another part of the final text, Russia is asked to "stop its destabilizing behavior and malicious activities". The cybersecurity issue has risen the priority of international agendas after the recent attacks on the energy company Colonial Pipeline and JBS, the largest meat processing company in the world. In both cases, a ransomware attack caused business to be disrupted and a $ 4.4 and $ 11 million ransom in bitcoin paid to allegedly Russian-based hackers (the DarkSide crew would be responsible in the former case).

A secure network

The forum therefore approved the principles of the secure internet developed by the "digital" ministers of the G7 as early as the end of April, based on eight common action points: protection of human rights online in guaranteeing freedom of opinion; a multi-stakeholder approach (companies, civil society, universities ...) in improving internet security; the inclusion of design-based safety principles among the social responsibilities of companies; transparency and reliability on the presence of harmful activities included in online services; research and sharing of good practices in the development of safe technologies; the protection of children from illegal or harmful content and activities; digital media education; the participation of young people.

Among the other commitments mentioned, the sharing of information to combat gender abuse online and the need to understand how international laws can be applied to cyberspace, involving the Ministers of the Interior and of Foreign Affairs. “We are also committed to working together to urgently address the growing shared threat of ransomware networks - the text continues -. We appeal to all states to identify and destroy the criminal networks operating in their countries and to hold these organizations accountable for their actions ”.

The G7 recalled the commitment to promote secure, resilient, competitive, transparent and sustainable telecommunication networks such as 5G, as well as diversified supply chains of digital infrastructures. Also on the table is the issue of data collection, in particular on the role of algorithms “which have reinforced or amplified historical bias or created new forms of bias or inequity”. Finally, on the subject of cybersecurity, the United States has already announced that it intends to continue the discussion on the subject also within NATO. According to reports from Reuters, an agreement plan with Russia has already been identified in principle for the exchange in extradition of cybercriminals between the two countries.
