Chrono Cross and other classics no longer downloadable on PS3 and PS Vita

Several classic games are no longer downloadable on PS3 and PS Vita, even if regularly purchased by users, including Chrono Cross. In fact they have become unplayable, without Sony or the various publishers having anticipated anything about it.

The problem has been reported by several PlayStation users, who evidently continue to use the old consoles. With the launch of Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, someone tried to retrieve the previously purchased version on the PlayStation Store, discovering the nasty surprise of not being able to access it anymore.

What's worse is that some users are getting some really contradictory messages. For example, Twitter user Christopher Foose found himself Chrono Cross who died on ... December 31, 1969.

Edmond Tran, Editor of GamesHub, reported a similar problem, again with Chrono Cross.

Tran still managed to download it from his library and play it on PS Vita, despite the deletion from the list.

Some might think that this is a sinister ploy to push sales of the remastered edition of Chrono Cross, but in reality the affected games are fun. For example, content creator Words had problems with Chrono Trigger, while Twitter user Steve J with Final Fantasy VI.

It seems that it was not only games from Square Enix that were affected, but also some of other publishers, such as Rune Factory: Oceans.

According to some, the problem could arise from the "Unix epoch ", that is to say from the arbitrary date set by some Unix engineers as a 0 point for the system, which combined with some bug in the PlayStation Store, would have set the end of the licenses of the various games at the Unix Epoch.
