PlayStation Studios: What games are in development? All official confirmations and rumors

PlayStation Studios

When a gamer thinks of PlayStation, he thinks of the multiple consoles released over the years, from laptops to stationary. But he also thinks of video games, which give those gaming machines a purpose. So think about the development studios that created, create and will create all those games: the PlayStation Studios.

The less experienced, however, may not have a complete and clear vision of who PlayStation Studios are, of which teams are part of the Sony Interactive Entertainment stable and, more importantly, what games they are now devoting themselves to.

In this article we want to show you all the information you need to know about the games in development at PlayStation Studios, as updated as possible.

Team Asobi

Logo by Team Asobi Founded in: 2012 (as a division of Japan Studio), 2021 (as an independent team)

Known games it has developed: Astro Bot Rescue Mission (PS4 + PS VR, 2018), Astro's Playroom (PS5 , 2020)

Officially working on: a new project, the team's "most ambitious game" to date. Unfortunately we have no other information on what this Japanese team is currently doing.

The rumors speak of: nothing. Rumors are also helping us to shape the new Team Asobi project. The studio is mostly known for VR projects and, as PS VR2 approaches, it is credible that it is back to work on something for virtual reality, perhaps once again linked to Astrobot.

Bend Studio

Bend Studio logo Acquired in: 2000

Known games he developed: Siphon Filter (PS1, 1999), Days Gone (PS4, 2019)

Officially working on: a new IP. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, said that Bend Studio is currently working on a new IP. Although not directly, he basically states that the (potential) Days Gone series is dead.

The rumors speak of: nothing. There are no interesting rumors about the new Bend Studio project. Players are hoping to see a return of Siphon Filter, but as this is a new IP, we can rule it out.

Bluepoint Games

Bluepoint Games Logo Acquired in: 2021

Known games he developed: Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection (PS4, 2015), Shadow of the Colossus (PS4 remake version, 2018), Demon's Souls (PS5 remake version, 2020)

Officially working on : not known. After the release of the PS5 remake of Demon's Souls, Bluepoint Games has not made any more announcements about how much is in development with the team who had however suggested that they are working on other projects, but it is not clear what it is.

The rumors speak of: two different projects. One of these should be an original game, a small-sized AAA (think Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales). The second project would instead be the remake of a game much loved by the public: we do not know what it is, but rumors say that it is not Metal Gear Solid.

Firesprite Limited

Logo di Firesprite Limited Acquired in: 2021, in turn bought Fabrik Games again in 2021

Popular games it has developed: The Playroom VR (PS4 + PS VR, 2016), The Persistence (PS4 + PS VR, 2018 )

Officially he is working on: Horizon: Call of the Mountain for PS VR2 (PS5), a new virtual reality adventure set in the narrative world of Horizon, the Guerrilla Games saga. However, we will not be Aloy, but a new character. For now we have only been able to see a small trailer that did not allow us to understand how the gameplay will be.

The rumors are about: Twisted Metal. According to some leaks, a Twisted Metal reboot was in the works at Lucid Games (Destruction AllStars), but the development has now passed into the hands of Firesprite. Furthermore, according to the rumors, there is at least a third project in development, if not a fourth, of which, however, we do not know anything.

Guerrilla Games

Logo of Guerrilla Games Acquired in: 2005

Known games he developed: Killzone (PS2, 2004), Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4, 2017)

Officially working on: Horizon Forbidden West for PS4 and PS5, out February 18, 2022. This is the sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn and puts us in the shoes of Aloy, the protagonist of the first chapter. There is a new setting, new enemies and new offensive and movement abilities, such as the ability to glide and use special spear attacks.

Rumors are about: Killzone. In the case of Guerrilla Games, there are no particularly convincing rumors or leaks, but the chatter of the internet points the finger towards a return of the shooter saga. Let's also assume that the Horizon team will be busy on Forbidden West for some time, both making patches and updates, and potential expansions, as happened with the first chapter.

Housemarque

Logo by Housemarque Acquired in: 2021

Known games he developed: Resogun (PS4, PS3, PS Vita, 2013), Returnal (PS5, 2021)

Officially working on: not known. After the release of Returnal, the development team hasn't announced anything anymore. In the first months, the development team was dedicated to the creation of patches for the roguelike shooter. However, it is credible that now the team is dedicating itself to a new project.

The rumors talking about: nothing. There are no relevant rumors for Housemarque. The team had kicked off the development of Stormdivers, a sort of multiplayer shooter that was officially hibernated, not to mention completely canceled. It seems unlikely that the company will pick up on that idea, so for the moment we have no basis on which to speculate.

Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games logo Acquired in: 2019

Known games he developed: Ratchet & Clank (PS2, 2002), Resistance (PS3, 2006), Marvel's Spider-Man (PS4, 2018)

Officially working on: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Marvel's Wolverine. Insomniac Games is completely dedicated to the Marvel world and it's no surprise considering the success of Marvel's Spider-Man and Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales. We haven't seen much of the two games yet, just a couple of teaser trailers. The first to come will be Spider-Man's third adventure, which will include both Peter Parker and Miles Morales, who will clash with Venom (and other yet unconfirmed enemies).

Rumors speak of: nothing. Insomniac Games is overworked to say the least, as last year it released Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart and a few months before Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales and Marvel's Spider-Man PS5 remaster. With two high-profile titles in development, we don't think there is serious room for more at the moment.

London Studio

Logo of London Studio Founded in: 2002

Known games he developed: Singstar (PS2, 2004), Blood & Truth (PS4 + PS VR, 2019)

Officially working on: a new project. The development team is looking for many new people who can work on a game, for now without a name, dedicated to PS5. According to the team, it is an online game.

The rumors speak of: nothing. The rumors pointed to a multiplayer game and the team has practically confirmed this, but no additional information is available. It's important to note that talking about PS5 gaming could be a way of hiding that it's actually a PS VR2 project (which is only compatible with PS5). SIE London Studio has mainly worked on PS VR over the years and it is credible that it continues in that direction.

Media Molecule

Logo di Media Molecule Founded in: 2010

Games note that he developed: LittleBigPlanet (PS3, 2008), Tearaway (PS Vita, 2013), Dreams (PS4, 2020)

Officially working on: Dreams. Although already released, Dreams is a game in continuous development and expansion. Media Molecule continues to support its creative sandbox with new content, such as Ancient Dangers: The Story of a Bat, and various enhancements, to support its players who are dedicated to creating levels.

The rumors they speak of: nothing. Media Molecule is not a particularly talked about company and it is credible that for some time it will continue to devote itself to Dreams, perhaps creating a native version for PS5. The LittleBigPlanet IP continued with Sackboy A Great Adventure, developed by Sumo Digital (a team outside of PlayStation Studios).

Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog Logo Acquired in: 2001

Known games he developed: Crash Bandicoot (PS1, 1996), Jak and Dexter (PS2, 2001), Uncharted (PS3, 2007), The Last of Us (PS3, 2013)

Officially working on: The Last of Us Part II multiplayer. While nothing has been shown for the time being and no actual announcement has been made, The Last of Us Part II's "Factions" mode was expected at the game's launch but has been postponed and made into a standalone game. There is no information on when it will be available.

Rumors speak of: The Last of Us Remake. Jason Schreier, a well-known journalist and insider, has confirmed that a PS5 remake of the first chapter is on the way. This remake would include not only graphical improvements, but also some gameplay changes based on the second game. Furthermore, rumors have long been rumors of a new IP for Naughty Dog, but these are rumors that we would not rely on.

Nixxes Software

Logo of Nixxes Software Acquired in: 2021

Popular games he has developed: Support for the PC version of various Square Enix games, such as Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel's Avengers.

Officially working on: PC port. PlayStation CEO - Jim Ryan - said Nixxes will help Sony in making the PC version of PlayStation games. It is currently unclear what they are doing. In recent months the team has supported Guerrilla Games with the development of patches for the PC version of Horizon Zero Dawn.

The rumors speak of: nothing. There is no persistent chatter about this team. For the moment we believe that the team will be dedicated solely to porting PlayStation games to PC.

Pixelopus

Pixelopus logo Founded in: 2014

Popular games it has developed : Entwined (PS3, PS Vita, PS4, 2014), Concrete Genie (PS4, 2019)

Officially working on: not known. Pixelopus has yet to announce a new project, following the pleasant but not revolutionary Concrete Genie. It is one of the smaller teams of Sony PlayStation, which has only developed the two games mentioned above, which have the same range as an indie.

The rumors speak of: nothing. There are no relevant rumors about Pixelopus. We can assume that the team is working on a new original IP. Impossible to say what it is.

Polyphony Digital

Logo of Polyphony Digital Founded in: 1994

Known games he has developed: Gran Turismo (PS1, 1997), Gran Turismo Sport (PS4, 2017)

Officially working on: Gran Turismo 7 for PS5 and PS4, due out March 4, 2022. The development team is finalizing work on the new chapter of Gran Turismo and probably he will be dedicated to this game for a long time, with patches, updates and new free content to support the community.

The rumors are about: nothing. Polyphony Digital is a development team completely dedicated to Gran Turismo and we don't believe that things will change suddenly. The series is successful and is Sony's only major automotive IP: it wouldn't make sense to put it aside. We don't even think the team wants to split their resources to work on a second, different project.

San Diego Studio

Logo of San Diego Studio Founded in: 2001

Known games he developed: The Mark of Kri (PS2, 2002), MLB The Show 21 (PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X | S, 2021)

Officially working on: not known. There hasn't been an official announcement about the new San Diego Studio project yet, but like all other sports franchises, we can assume that MLB: The Show 2022 is in development.

The rumors speak for themselves. by: SOCOM. Some rumors point the finger at a new SOCOM, co-developed together with Guerrilla Games. However, these are minor voices, which we shouldn't listen too much at the moment.

Santa Monica Studio

Logo of Santa Monica Studio Founded in: 1999

Known games he developed: God of War (PS2, 2005), God of War (PS4, 2018)

Officially working on: God of War Ragnarok for PS4 and PS5, coming in 2022. The new chapter of the adventures of Kratos will close the Norse story of the Greek god of war. We do not know if the studio intends to continue with the saga or if it is thinking of putting it on hiatus after Ragnarok. We also know that the director of God of War (2018) - Cory Barlog - is not the director of Ragnarok, but is dealing with another game, of which however we have no information.

The rumors speak of : nothing. Ragnarok is the team's main project and there have been no particular rumors about what to expect next. Barlog's project is a mystery for now.

Sucker Punch Productions

Logo of Sucker Punch Productions Acquired in: 2011

Popular games he developed: Sly Raccoon ( PS2, 2002), inFamous (PS3, 2009), Ghost of Tsushima (PS4, 2020)

Officially working on: not known. After the release of the expansion The Island of Iki for Ghost of Tsushima in 2020, the development team has not announced anything more about its new project. For the moment we have no information about it.

The rumors speak of: nothing. There are no "serious" rumors about the next Sucker Punch project, but everyone assumes that - after the success of the first chapter - the Bellevue team is ready to make a second chapter of Ghost of Tsushima. There are probably years left to the new game, which will credibly be dedicated exclusively to PS5.

Valkyrie Entertainment

Logo by Valkyrie Entertainment Acquired in: 2021

Popular games it has developed : Guns Up! (PC, PS4, 2015)

Officially working on: God of War Ragnarok, as support team at Santa Monica Studio. Valkyrie has worked as a support team for God of War (2018), but also for Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport 7, League of Legends, Valorant, Middle-earth, Shadow of War and more. Currently the team also has two original games not announced yet, but it is not clear if they are PlayStation exclusives or the result of agreements prior to the acquisition.

The rumors speak of: nothing. Valkyrie Entertainment is one of those many teams about which the general public has never heard a single word, at least until the acquisition by Sony. It is a support team, but the presence of two original games in development suggests that it may offer something proprietary sooner or later.

The support teams

Finally, we want devote a small paragraph to those lesser-known PlayStation Studio teams, which do not deal with game developers themselves, but rather to support Sony's internal (and external) teams. Let's talk about:

Malaysia Studio: one of the lesser known teams, provides graphic support in the creation of assets for the games of other PlayStation Studios teams San Mateo Studio: has given support for the development of games such as SOCOM, Resistance , Marvel's Spider-Man; provides animations and graphic assets. XDev: Provides assistance to external teams working on Sony-exclusive games, such as FromSoftware (Demon's Souls and Bloodborne), Lucid (Destruction AllStars) and Quantic Dream (Heavy Rain, Detroid: Become Human) Visual Arts Service Group: provides graphics support to Sony's internal teams. According to Schreier, it's the team that kicked off work on The Last of Us Remake, before it passed into the hands of Naughty Dog and Visual Arts became just a support team again.
