How does the Dyson air purifier that neutralizes formaldehyde

New solid state formaldehyde detection sensor, fully sealed filtration system and quieter airflow: this is how Dyson air purifiers are renewed

The presence of formaldehyde in a home is the proof of how an environment - especially if it has just been renovated - may not be completely healthy. The danger of this pungent-smelling organic compound is often underestimated. So much so that the same Ministry of Health, as early as 1983, set the maximum exposure limit at 0.1 parts per million in the environments in which it resides.

Formaldehyde causes eye and nasal irritation. It causes sneezing, coughing, fatigue and skin rash. Some individuals susceptible to formaldehyde may have adverse reactions even at lower concentrations. The same International Agency for Research on Cancer since 2004 has included formaldehyde among the carcinogenic compounds. But let's understand how it is generated in environments.

Combustion generates formaldehyde

How formaldehyde is created

Its origins can be very different. Formaldehyde is a product of combustion. This also includes tobacco smoke and other sources of combustion such as chimneys and stoves. It is also emitted by some resins used for insulation. It is also used in furniture for chipboard and plywood. But also in upholstery, carpets, curtains and other textiles that have undergone anti-crease treatments.

Formaldehyde is particularly difficult to capture as it is 500 times smaller than particles as small as 0.1 microns. But if not detected, it can lead to prolonged exposure due to the continuous release of chemicals into the air. This phenomenon is known as outgassing.

Every day, people breathe up to 9,000 liters of air. Even before the pandemic, up to 90 percent of the time was spent indoors. For this reason it is convenient to have a device capable of detecting, capturing and destroying this pollutant such as Dyson Purifier Formaldehyde.

Solid state sensor for formaldehyde

How can formaldehyde be eliminated

This new purifier air is the first with the new solid state formaldehyde detection technology. A sensor that is added to those for detecting nitrogen dioxide, volatile organic compounds, temperature and humidity. Thanks to an electrochemical cell, the Dyson formaldehyde sensor through a specific algorithm checks the data every second. This allows it to selectively detect formaldehyde and not to confuse it with other volatile organic compounds.

Dyson's Selective Catalytic Oxidation filter continuously destroys formaldehyde at the molecular level. The catalytic filter has a unique coating with the same structure as the cryptomel mineral. Its billions of tunnels, the size of an atom, are optimal in size and shape to trap and destroy formaldehyde. This is broken down into small amounts of water and carbon dioxide. The same filter then regenerates itself from the oxygen in the air to continue destroying the formaldehyde, without ever being replaced.

Watertight filter

In the new Dyson purifiers, the HEPA 13 standard is guaranteed by the filter and the entire device. It captures the H1N111 virus and 99.95 percent of particles down to 0.1 microns such as allergens, bacteria, pollen and mold spores. The device is completely sealed. This is due to the high pressure seals positioned in 24 other critical points to prevent dirty air from escaping from the filters and carrying pollutants back into the room.

Furthermore, thanks to Dyson Air Multiplier technology, the device is able to diffuse purified air in every corner of the room. The automatic mode allows the purifier to maintain the desired room temperature and the optimal level of air quality. The device can also be fully controlled via the Dyson Link App and activated via voice control.

Prices and availability

Thanks to this new sensor, the completely sealed filtration system and the new, quieter air flow, the entire range has been renewed. It starts with Dyson Purifier Cool Forma l dehyde at 649 euros, while Dyson Purifier Hot + Cool Formaldehyde, at 699 euros, will be available from June 2021.
